Google Calendar works with iCal

No, it’s not official, but there are strong rumors that Google Calendar (code name CL2) will work with iCal as they use the same file format.

CL2 is closely, very closely, integrated with Gmail. It includes now-standard web 2.0 features - Ajax, suscription feeds for integration with iCal and other desktop calendars, event creation, search, sharing, notifications (including SMS) and more. - TechCrunch (with screen shots)

This is good news as I use iCal more and more every day. If I could sync iCal and Google Calendar I’d be great as I don’t have a WebDAV server to publish to currently.

Could be weeks before we get the official announcement from Google, but it sounds like Google Calendar will be a welcome addition to Gmail and iCal!

The issue is that AFAICT thus far it only supports *import from* iCal. This is critical in that you’ll have to manually import your iCal data to Google calendar each time you want to ’sync’.

Chris, I think this is an issue too, however you can work around it. You can get a free http://www.icalx.com account and have iCal publish there then have Google subscribe to that calendar. It’s a round about way but it should work as long as your calendars are public. Myself, I’m just uploading iCal calendars to my website via FTP and having Google subscribe to them there. Yea it’s a pain, but it’s all I got for now.

http://www.box.net has free 1gb webdav accounts. I use it to publish my ical to and subscribe elsewhere (thunderbird etc). Not managed to subscribe with google calendar though.

I subscribe to my Google Calendar via iCal, Thunderbird and use SyncMyCal to sync it to Outlook. :D
